ATK Engines is proud to maintain an 80+ year history of engine building. ATK’s sister company, VEGE Motoren was founded by Mr. Wim Versteeg in 1936, originally a small garage business, the founder saw an opportunity to expand after the Second World War. Many American military vehicles, Dodge, Chevrolet & GMC had been left in Holland and were in daily use by the civilian population. Wim’s idea was to be able to respond quickly to the demand for these engines, so he bought up a stock of defective units, reconditioned them at his own cost and put them into stock.
Simultaneously the VEGE exchange system was born; the defective old engines originating from the vehicles in which Wim had installed a reconditioned engine were accepted from the customer in ‘part-exchange’ and could be re-used. These old units were the raw material the factory required for future production. We believe that this simple concept helps establish our eco-credentials and makes us one of the oldest recyclers in the automotive industry if not the world.
Fast forward to current day where ATK High Performance, ATK Remanufacturing and ATK VEGE are proud to have sold over 5 million powertrain products worldwide. ATK High Performance was established in 2007 in Grand Prairie, Texas. The company led by Mark Johnson and Brandon Simkiss has become one of the largest performance engine shops in the country. Our products are offered by the most reputable companies in the industry and can be seen in classics, muscle cars, daily drivers, off road vehicles, boats and full blown race cars. Our goal was to build top quality engines with name brand components, and a broad range of power offerings for all budgets. A little background information on the man that leads the show, Mark Johnson!
When Mark was in his teens, he started working in a small performance machine shop in Arlington TX, where he began to learn the craft of building engines. In 1984 Mark started his career with renowned race engine builder, Reher & Morrison, where he perfected the skill of building high end race engines. While at Reher & Morrison Mark was a part of several development programs for major sponsors including GM, NASCAR and Pro-Stock engine development and builds. Mark was heavily involved in Reher & Morrison’s own Pro Stock Team which took several world championships in both NHRA and IHRA. He also traveled the country teaching the Reher & Morisson engine school!
Mark has enjoyed building a wide variety of high performance engines for street, strip, water and off road applications. Through Marks experience as a master machinist, vast engine building knowledge, extensive testing of parts as well as working with the leading parts companies in the industry, he knows what it takes to build a top quality engine at all levels. Rest assured he passes this knowledge on to his team and educates daily so that we can all learn about the craft of engine building.
Our vision is to drive the highest quality in ATK’s product line and putting his 40+ years of experience in race engine development to use in the consumer market is a vital step.
